Matter

Matter, from Stemcell Science Shop, is a monthly box for anyone who likes holding a piece of science in their hand. Instead of toys or replicas, each shipment brings 3 to 6 authentic collectibles, things like fossils, meteorite fragments, historic artifacts, crystals and unusual engineered materials. The seller says every item is verified and values each box at up to $75. Every specimen comes with its own numbered research card that explains what it is and why it matters, so the box works as a small rotating museum exhibit as well as a conversation starter. Past themes listed on Cratejoy include a box built around Skylab, one featuring a fragment of a particle accelerator and a Hoover Dam box, which gives a sense of how far-ranging the curation is. Matter is pitched at curious families, and its tags cover tweens and teens, but adult science fans are clearly part of the audience too. It is a strong pick for a kid who collects rocks or a grown-up who reads about space and history for fun. The longer prepaid terms bring the per-box price down, US shipping is free, and new subscribers' first box goes out with the next monthly batch, so there may be a short wait.
